If America is the melting pot of the world, ABP fulfills that function for the diverse denizens of Cambridge. Preppy students, homeless Spare Change salesmen, dazzled tourists, obsessive chessmasters, and the occasional trapped bird have congregated here for over twenty years, and the place shows no sign of losing its cosmopolitan flair. ABP serves up “gourmet fast food,” with fresh bread in many incarnations (bagels, sandwiches, and pastries $1-5). Catch the daily bake sale (4-6pm) at the Mass. Ave. location, when all pastries are 50% off. You'll also find ABP branches in Brattle Sq. and at 1100 Mass. Ave., toward Central. Also at 27 Brattle St. and 1100 Mass. Ave.
The Au Bon Pain at 27 Brattle Street in Harvard Square served as the location in "Good Will Hunting" where Will tries to explain himself to Harvard student Skylar.

It's about time that Harvard Square got its own bubble tea joint, especially for those who refuse to splash out for the Greenhouse's overpriced and lackluster imitations. Replacing the short-lived Lollicup, Boston Tea Stop promises a welcome oasis for fans of the sweet shaken tea drink with tapioca pearls. But it's more than just tea at the Tea Stop: individually-designed drinks allow customers to add tapioca or coconut jelly to juices, teas (hot or iced, with or without milk), slushes, snows, and smoothies. The flavors seem almost endless, and though they use syrups instead of the real thing, the staff encourages students to mix and match for unique drinks like mango with passionfruit and strawberry with rose flower. Mochi, sweet sticky rice wrapped around ice cream, come in equally exotic varieties, with tiramisu, lychee, red bean, and strawberry with dark chocolate chips.

This stop in the national chain is more of the starbucks we have come to know and love. With a small yet comfortable sitting area...and a pleasant staff, this location although it can get busy is a great place to stop just off of the main axis of the square.

Fast food, Harvard style. Fresh sandwiches ($4-6) such as Smoked Turkey and Roast Chicken are served up to a mix of busy tourists and undergrads relaxing in the Yard. C'est Bon rounds out its quality array of caffeinated products, like cappuccino, latte, and delicious hot chocolate, with a wide selection of baked goods ($1-4). And it's Lebanese owned and run, so try one of their many Middle Eastern sandwiches or wraps; the falafel is particularly good.

Don't let the Busch beer sign mislead you—Darwin's is an oasis of gourmet food, just minutes away from the heart of the Square. But don't let the promise of gourmet food fool you, either; Darwin's also carries a decent selection of beer and wine. The deli counter is the home of the best sandwiches ($5.75-7.25) around, named for local streets intersecting with Brattle. Try the “Longfellow,” ham with cheddar and fresh apple slices, or the “Mount Auburn,” smoked turkey and cheese with avocado and tomato. Add some variety to your meal with one of Darwin's tasty sides, like pasta salad or broccolini, and enjoy it in the relaxed atmosphere of the store's fully-stocked coffee bar. The staff, mirroring the general ambiance, is friendly and inviting. Also a good selection of fresh fruit, veggies, and organic and specialty foods.

Lose yourself in the heady atmosphere of Pamplona, where the intellectual vibes from the bobo-meets-soho clientele are sure to get you stimulated about even the blandest of this week's Core readings. Study cove by day and salon by night, Pamplona is a great post-dinner-date coffee alternative to the few late nite spots the Square has to offer; it's classier than ABP, and less pricey than Toscanini's. The sparsity of tables and a low ceiling create the feeling of a bunker but in warm weather, outdoor seating creates a whole new world. Though it served the same menu for 42 years, Pamplona now offers up with an updated selection of Spanish tapas and sandwiches. The Setas al Ajillo (mushrooms in a garlic sauce; $5) is a hit, and the mini brocatas are more filling than their name might suggest. But not to worry: all the old favorites (media noche, Italian sodas, and delicious desserts; $1-3.50) persist.
